How to start a plant-based lifestyle

What exactly is a plant-based diet?

A plant-based diet consists of eating fruit, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, and seeds in their minimally processed forms while avoiding animal products overly processed.

Top reasons to go plant-based:
  • getting rid of some kind of disease;
  • increasing energy;
  • helping save the planet and animals;
  • passion for this lifestyle.

Tips for starting a plant-based diet:

🍒 Educate yourself

The first thing you need to do to start a plant-based diet is read up on the subject. So I suggest you inform yourself, a fun way to stay on top of new information is to listen to some vegan podcasts or watch YouTube videos or read books about this topic for example.

🍒 Eat more food

If you come from a diet high in animal products and processed foods, the size of your meals has to increase when switching over to a plant-based diet. That’s because plant-based food is less calorically dense.

If you struggle to eat larger portions, replace some of the veggies with more caloric food things like nut butter, seeds, bread, or tofu for example. But over time, your body will get used to these kinds of volumes.

🍒 Your shopping list will change

Buy lots of fruits and vegetables (you can buy frozen instead of fresh to prevent food waste), potatoes and rice, bread, tofu, beans, and nuts. You can cook plenty of dishes, plus they are a source of energy which makes them very convenient.

🍒 Make food swaps

Don’t restrict, just replace!

Swap some of your favorite meals for a healthy alternative.

For example:

  • use some nut butter instead of regular butter
  • tofu instead of chicken
  • bean burgers instead of beef
  • maple syrup instead of honey
  • whole grains instead of white ones

And the list goes on.

🍒 Surround yourself with people with the same interests

Join Facebook groups about plant-based diets, follow new Instagram accounts for some inspiration, and ask them about recipes or doubts that you’ve on this new diet.

🍒 Keep things fun

Get inspired by books, Pinterest, or YouTube videos and try different meals, buy new products that look interesting and which you have never eaten before once in a while.

🍒 Commitment

Consistency is key with the plant-based diet. And it’s okay if you fail, learn from your mistakes and keep up your hard work to commit to the whole-food plant-based diet.

🍒 Baby steps

Remember you can’t change your eating habits overnight, especially if you have a high diet in animal products. Try to make the best health decisions the majority of the time. You’ll more likely to stick with this new lifestyle for the long term.

Other things to keep in mind:

  • Eating plant-based is a lot cheaper than eating a “normal” diet;
  • Get your family/loved ones involved with your diet. They’re much more likely to get on board when they feel included;
  • Cook most of your meals at home, it’s cheaper and you can control what you’re eating;
  • Do blood tests regularly and if you are transitioning to a plant-based diet consider taking supplement vitamin B12;
  • Please always consult with your doctor about your personal health situation or consult a doctor or therapist if you have an unhealthy relationship with food.
